Example 1: Round to the nearest whole number

Round each number to the nearest whole number.
a. 2.6  
  Look at the tenths place: 2.6
6 is greater than 5 so we round 2.6 up to 3.
b. 8.2  
  Look at the tenths place: 8.2
2 is less than 5 so we round 8.2 down to 8.
c. 10  
  10 is a whole number.
So 10 rounded to the nearest whole number is 10.


Example 2: Round to the nearest hundredth

Round each number to the nearest hundredth.
a. 3.647  
  Look at the thousandths place: 3.647
7 is greater than 5 so we round 3.647 up to 3.65.
b. 6.423  
  Look at the thousandths place: 6.423
3 is less than 5 so we round 6.423 down to 6.42.
