Rounding large numbers is the same as rounding regular numbers. The same rules apply.

TIP: For large numbers, use the commas to help you with place values.


Examples:

Round each number to the nearest 10,000.
a. 52,908
  Look at the thousands place: 52,908
2 is less than 5 so round 52,908 down to 50,000.
b. 179,952
  Look at the thousands place: 179,952
9 is greater than 5 so round 179,952 up to 180,000.

Round each number to the nearest 1,000,000.
a. 74,428,133
  Look at the hundred-thousands place: 74,428,133
4 is less than 5 so round 74,428,133 down to 74,000,000.
b. 1,283,264,999
  Look at the hundred-thousands place: 1,283,264,999
2 is less than 5 so round 1,283,264,999 down to 1,283,000,000.
