Percentage Change

To calculate the percentage change between two numbers, we use the formula

new number - original number

original number

Example 1: Increase in change

Fill in the follwoing with the correct percentage increase or decrease to the nearest whole percent.
308 is % greater than 175

In this problem, you are comparing 308 to 175. So 175 is the original number and 308 is the new number.
  308 - 175

175
= 133

175
= 0.76 = 76%

So 308 is % greater than 175

Example 2: Decrease in change

Fill in the follwoing with the correct percentage increase or decrease to the nearest whole percent.
34 is % smaller than 425

In this problem, you are comparing 34 to 425. So 425 is the original number and 34 is the new number.
  34 - 425

425
= -391

425
= -0.92 = -92%
The answer is negative because there is a decrease in percentage change.

So 34 is % smaller than 425
