Perimeter and Area Word Problems

For this topic, you need to know how to find the perimeter and area of rectangular shapes.
To review, see the topic Compare Rectangle Area and Perimeter.

Based on the word problem, you need to figure out what it is asking for: area, perimeter, width, or length.

Example 1: Perimeter
Solve. Answer with proper units. To represent m2, use "sq m". Sample answer: 5 sq m.

Harry has a rectangular herb garden that is 6 ft long and 11 ft wide.
What length of fencing does he need to fence in his entire garden?

Fencing goes around the garden.
So we are looking for the perimeter in this problem.

Example 2: Area and Cost

Elena wants new carpeting for her bedroom. Her
bedroom is a 9 m by 7 m rectangle. If carpeting costs
$2 per square meter, how much will it cost to lay
carpet for her entire bedroom?

This is a two-part problem.
  1) find out how much carpet Elena needs
  2) calculate the cost of the carpet

Amount of carpet
Carpeting will cover the bedroom.
So we are looking for the area.
