Time Intervals
The clock below will help you. Count the number of hours clockwise (in the direction of the arrow) from the start time to the end time.
Example 1: A.M.
Solve. How many hours are there from 6:13am to 10:13am? hours Since the minutes are the same (:13), we only look at the difference between the hours. Solution: Counting Using the clock above, we start at 6:00am and count clockwise to 10:00am. 6:00 am → 7:00 am → 8:00 am → 9:00 am → 10:00 am Count: 1 hour 2 hours 3 hours 4 hours Counting from 6:00am to 10:00am is 4 hours. Alternate Solution: Subtraction 10:00am - 6:00am = 10 - 6 = 4 hours The answer is hours.
Since the minutes are the same (:13), we only look at the difference between the hours.
Solution: Counting Using the clock above, we start at 6:00am and count clockwise to 10:00am.
Counting from 6:00am to 10:00am is 4 hours.
Alternate Solution: Subtraction 10:00am - 6:00am = 10 - 6 = 4 hours
The answer is hours.
Example 2: A.M. and P.M.
Solve. If it is now 8:00 am, what time will it be in six and three-quarters hours? : --- am pm Solution: Addition 8:00 am is 8 hours after the beginning of the day. Six and three-quarters hours (6:45) after 8:00 am is 8:00 + 6:45 = 14:45 2:45 pm is 14 hours and 45 minutes after the beginning of the day. 14:45 = 2:45 pm Alternate Solution: Counting 1. Count the hours Using the clock above, we start at 8:00am and count 6 hours clockwise to 2:00pm. 8:00 am → 9:00 am → 10:00 am → 11:00 am → 12:00 pm → 1:00 pm → 2:00 pm Count: 1 hour 2 hours 3 hours 4 hours 5 hours 6 hours 2. Count the minutes Three-quarters of an hour = 45 minutes From 2:00pm to 2:45pm is 45 minutes. The answer is : --- am pm
Solution: Addition 8:00 am is 8 hours after the beginning of the day. Six and three-quarters hours (6:45) after 8:00 am is 8:00 + 6:45 = 14:45
2:45 pm is 14 hours and 45 minutes after the beginning of the day. 14:45 = 2:45 pm
Alternate Solution: Counting 1. Count the hours Using the clock above, we start at 8:00am and count 6 hours clockwise to 2:00pm.
2. Count the minutes Three-quarters of an hour = 45 minutes From 2:00pm to 2:45pm is 45 minutes.
The answer is : --- am pm
Example 3: next day
Solve. What time was it eight hours before 3:00 am? : --- am pm Solution: Subtraction 3:00 am is 3 hours after the beginning of the day. Eight hours (8:00) before 3:00 am crosses into the previous day, so add 24 hours. 24:00 + 3:00 - 8:00 = 19:00 7:00 pm is 19 hours after the beginning of the day. 19:00 = 7:00 pm Alternate Solution: Counting Using the clock above, we start at 3:00am and count 8 hours (backwards or) counter-clockwise to 7:00pm. 3:00 am → 2:00 am → 1:00 am → 12:00 am → 11:00 pm → 10:00 pm → 9:00 pm → 8:00 pm → 7:00 pm Count: 1 hour 2 hours 3 hours 4 hours 5 hours 6 hours 7 hours 8 hours The answer is : --- am pm
Solution: Subtraction 3:00 am is 3 hours after the beginning of the day. Eight hours (8:00) before 3:00 am crosses into the previous day, so add 24 hours. 24:00 + 3:00 - 8:00 = 19:00
7:00 pm is 19 hours after the beginning of the day. 19:00 = 7:00 pm
Alternate Solution: Counting Using the clock above, we start at 3:00am and count 8 hours (backwards or) counter-clockwise to 7:00pm.
Alternate Explanation: Since the time you are looking for is in the past, count backwards. Count the hours.
Alternate Explanation: Count the hours.
Alternate Explanation: 11:00 pm is 23 hours after the beginning of the day. Twelve hours (12:00) before 11:00 pm is 23:00 - 12:00 = 11:00
Alternate Explanation: 6:00 am is 6 hours after the beginning of the day. 2:00 pm is 14 hours after the beginning of the day. 14 hours - 6 hours = 8 hours
Alternate Explanation: 3:00 pm is 15 hours after the beginning of the day. Eleven hours (11:00) after 3:00 pm is 15:00 + 11:00 = 26:00 Since 26:00 > 24:00, the time has passed into the next day so subtract 24:00. 26:00 - 24:00 = 2:00 am
Alternate Explanation: 7:00 pm is 19 hours after the beginning of the day. 12:00 am is midnight, which is the beginning of the day. Since 12:00 am is in the next day, add 24 hours. (There are 24 hours in a day.) 0 hours + 24 hours - 19 hours = 5 hours
Alternate Explanation: Since the times cross from am to pm, use noon (12:00pm) to help us count the time. 9:00 am is 3 hours before noon. 9:00 pm is 9 hours after noon.
Alternate Explanation: 9:00 am is 9 hours after the beginning of the day. 9:00 pm is 21 hours after the beginning of the day. 21 hours - 9 hours = 12 hours
Alternate Explanation: Since the time you are looking for is in the past, count backwards. 1. Count the hours.
Alternate Explanation: 1. Count the hours.
Alternate Explanation: 10:15 am is 10 hours and 15 minutes after the beginning of the day. 3:30 pm is 15 hours and 30 minutes after the beginning of the day. 15 hours and 30 minutes - 10 hours and 15 minutes = 5 hours and 15 minutes
Alternate Explanation: 6:43 am is 6 hours and 43 minutes after the beginning of the day. Eleven hours and 22 minutes (11:22) after 6:43 am is 6:43 + 11:22 = 18:05 6:05 pm is 18 hours and 5 minutes after the beginning of the day. 18:05 = 6:05 pm
Alternate Explanation: 9:10 pm is 21 hours and 10 minutes after the beginning of the day. 2:51 am is 2 hours and 51 minutes after the beginning of the day. Since 2:51 am is in the next day, add 24 hours. (There are 24 hours in a day.) 2 hours and 51 minutes + 24 hours - 21 hours and 10 minutes = 5 hours and 41 minutes
