Relative Place Value



A number can be expressed as
34,659 = 30,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 50 + 9
The value of a digit increases as you move to the left.
The place value of each digit is 10 times the place value of the digit to its right.
The 3 in 34,659 is greater than the 4 in 34,659 because 30,000 > 4,000
The 4 in 34,659 is greater than the 6 in 34,659 because 4,000 > 600
The 6 in 34,659 is greater than the 5 in 34,659 because 600 > 50
The 5 in 34,659 is greater than the 9 in 34,659 because 50 > 9


Example 1: Identifying values

Type the value of the red digit. Example: 4,384 = 4,000
1.   192,960
In the expanded form, 192,960 = 100,000 + 90,000 + 2,000 + 900 + 60 + 0
So the value is 90,000.

2.   3,287
In the expanded form, 3,287 = 3,000 + 200 + 80 + 7
So the value is 3,000.


Example 2: Relative place value

The blue digit is the red digit.

The 4 in 486,690 has a value of 400,000.
The 4 in 542,410 has a value of 40,000.

400,000 is 10 times 40,000.
400,000 = 10 × 40,000

The 5 in 590,251 has a value of 50.

5 is 1/10 of 50.
