Things to Consider Regarding Math Tutors
When a child is doing poorly in math, the knee-jerk reaction of many parents
and teachers is to provide additional tutoring for the child. Although hiring
a math tutor is always beneficial, it may not be the most effective
approach for some children. The reason why is that a math tutor's first task
is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a child. If it turns out that
the child's weakness is basic skills, such as math facts, the only thing a
math tutor can do is invent basic math problems on the fly and hone basic
skills. Although this is effective, a child in this position simply needs
redundant math practice, which can be more cost-effectively done by a
software program. Ironically, MathScore can tutor a child weak in basic
skills more effectively than a live tutor because it generates and grades math
problems immediately without making any mistakes, and doesn't intimidate
the child.
