MATHSCORE.COM SCORES HIGH IN STANDARDIZED TESTS
-- Measurable Improvement in Math Skills Shows the Effectiveness of MathScore
Internet-based Adaptive Mathematics Practice Environment --
PALO ALTO, Calif., August 31, 2005 -- Accurate Learning System Corporation today
released the results of its MathScore.com pilot program, which show impressive
improvement on the 2005 California Department of Education Standardized Testing
and Reporting (STAR) test.
The STAR test results demonstrated an average raw score increase of 39 points,
outperforming the control group by 49%. The median students saw a raw score
increase of 41.5 points outperforming the control group by 80%. In addition,
MathScore took a classroom from 34% proficient as 4th graders, to 53% proficient
as 5th graders, an impressive 19% gain. These results are from a pilot program
at Bishop Elementary in Sunnyvale, California, where one class used MathScore
and two other classes of the same grade levels were the control group.
"MathScore's mission is to improve the math education of millions of students by
providing a superior learning environment compared to existing solutions," said
Steven Yang, founder and CEO of Active Learning Systems Corporation. "The STAR
test is official, independent proof that MathScore usage effectively improves
math learning. It is gratifying to see that even in the first year of use we're
already beginning to achieve the MathScore mission."
"My students find that MathScore is easy to use, and I find it is a definite
contributor toward helping them understand the concepts they learn in regular
math instruction," explained Janette Leath, 5th grade teacher, Bishop
Elementary, Sunnyvale, CA. "I have even heard comments such as 'Math is fun!'
from several students after they had finished a session and thoroughly
understood a particular concept."
"In accordance with No Child Left Behind, MathScore incorporates research-backed
learning principles," explained John Cradler, President of Educational Support
Systems. "Continuous feedback and built-in assessment tools enable students to
learn efficiently, parents to remain involved with their children and teachers
to easily and cost-effectively work with all of their students. MathScore
works."
"The MathScore pilot program was a resounding success," continued Yang. "As we
spent time with the numbers we noticed several interesting trends. For example,
in looking at all five achievement levels, the students demonstrated a clear
correlation that showed the more MathScore was used, the greater the increase in
test score and improvement by that student. It's absolutely thrilling to have
independent, standardized tests tell us we're on the right track."
Beginning in 1997, California began putting into place a comprehensive
standards-based educational system for all students. The STAR test validates
student performance with respect to California state standards, and the results
are used to track progress with respect to No Child Left Behind. Students attain
one of five levels of performance on the California Standards Tests (CSTs) for
each subject tested: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic, and far below
basic. The State Board of Education has established the proficient level as the
desired achievement goal for all students. The pilot project class using
MathScore showed the number of students to achieve the proficient level and
above increased by a dramatic 19% in one year of use.
MathScore is an Internet-based, measurable, adaptive mathematics practice
environment for grades 2-8 that enables self-paced learning. MathScore's
patent-pending math program is currently offered to teachers, providing a math
practice environment with instantaneous feedback and attainable goals that
motivate students to become better at math. Students can practice math in the
school lab or from home via the Internet. Teachers can consult system-provided
feedback for immediate indication of improvement, or insufficient improvement,
and course correct as necessary. Teachers interested in MathScore can find
