MATHSCORE STUDENT DATA REVEALS INSUFFICIENT MATH SKILLS ARE CONSISTENT
ACROSS THE COUNTRY
-- Less Than 1-in-5 Fifth Graders in the United States Know Their Multiplication
Tables, Fewer than 1-in-4 Know Addition Tables --
PALO ALTO, Calif., February 13, 2008 - Accurate Learning Systems Corporation
today announced the result of a survey of their "before" data from thousands of
students across the entire country, which indicates that fewer than 1-in-5 fifth
graders throughout the United States know their multiplication tables, and less
than 25% of the fifth graders have memorized their addition tables.
"Typically, students who haven't memorized their math facts cannot manipulate
fractions or negative numbers," explained Steven Yang, founder and CEO of
Accurate Learning Systems Corporation. "Failure in these two skills leads to
inevitable failure in Algebra I. We expected more variation in the results and
were surprised at the consistency across the country."
The data comes from math practice scores using the Accurate Learning Systems
Corporation product, MathScore.com. The "before" data demonstrates pre-existing
skill level as determined by where students get stuck when they first try to use
the MathScore.com math practice environment.
"We've already made public comparison data of 'before' vs. 'after' as a result
of several pilot programs showing the effectiveness of math practice, and of
using MathScore.com to practice math," continued Yang. "However, we had never
before looked at just the 'before' data and were quite surprised at the
consistent results. Our shock inspired us to examine what we can create from
our system, and make freely available, to encourage math practice. These results
are why we created a math worksheets generator."
Math-worksheets-generator.com was also announced today (see related release).
