MathScore Research Basis
A large variety of MathScore's features align with education research. Here
are some highlights:
MathScore is a Mastery-Based Learning System
A mastery-based learning system is a system that breaks a subject into
small, individual skills. It is expected that students master the easier
skills before progressing to the more difficult skills.
Credit generally goes to Block and Bloom. Sources include:
- Mastery Learning: Theory and Practice by James H. Block, 1971
- BLOOM, BENJAMIN S. 1968. "Learning for Mastery."

MathScore Aligns with the NCTM Curriculum Focal Points
After years of research, the NCTM concluded that certain mathematical concepts
deserve more attention than others, and published their Curriculum Focal Points on September 12, 2006. The focus of MathScore
almost perfectly aligns with their conclusions.
MathScore Aligns with the Conclusions of the National Math Panel
On March 13, 2008, the National Math Panel released its conclusions regarding
the state of mathematics education in the United States and its recommendations
for improving math competence. Information can be found here.
Their conclusions highlight automaticity with addition and multiplication
math facts as absolutely critical. See page 45 and 46 regarding fluency with
whole numbers and fractions. The benchmarks on page 48 specifically highlight
basic skills that must be mastered. MathScore is designed to help students
achieve these benchmarks.
